Support members in improving environmental health in New Mexico by promoting their expertise, professionalism, advancement and recognition.


WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH?

The science and practice of promoting and protecting human well-being by identifying and evaluating environmental hazards, preventing or reducing exposure to harmful physical, chemical, and biological agents in air, water, soil, food, and other surroundings, and maintaining ecological balance to support healthy environments and long-term human health.

The New Mexico Environment Department's Mission is to provide highest quality of life throughout the state by promoting a safe, clean and productive environment. In meeting the goals of our Mission, we are committed to: Providing clear articulation of our goals, standards, and expectations in a professional manner so that employees and the public can make informed decisions and be actively involved in setting priorities, promoting environmental awareness through the practice of open and direct communication and sound decision-making by carrying out the mandates and initiatives of the department in a fair and consistent manner.

The vision of Bernalillo County Environmental Health (BCEH) is a clean and healthy environment for all residents in Bernalillo County.  Environmental Health staff contribute to community health and well-being through environmental protection, environmental public health education and public health assessment.  BCEH staff work in the areas that link human health, environmental quality, and public policy. 

The primary mission of the City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department is to provide a safe and healthful environment for city residents through the development, implementation, monitoring, and verification of environmental and consumer health programs. Departmental goals are met through community outreach, training, consultation, enforcement, and permitting activities. The Albuquerque Environmental Health Department also provides a proactive approach to developing and addressing stakeholder needs and developing science as it applies to the City’s mission.

The Albuquerque Area Indian Health Service, Division of Environmental Health Services (DEHS), is a critical component of the IHS preventive care programs. The purpose of the DEHS program is to provide a wide range of services to address environmental health conditions contributing to morbidity and mortality among Indian people. The environment, which includes the home, community, and the workplace, as well as the natural surroundings, is recognized as a vital factor in a person’s overall health and well being.
